Our first stop in Sri Lanka was Habarana, in the centre of the cultural triangle. The area is a jungle with wild elephants roaming the national parks and plenty of wildlife, including large lizards, in our own hotel which bordered a lake. The weather was warm but we had frequent downpours and there was a lot of standing water which indicated this was a regular, seasonal feature. We visited Sigiraya, an ancient fortress built upon Lion rock and saw the frescoes painted in the caves. We also took the opportunity to ride on an elephant and also took great pleasure seeing them in the wild.
