After leaving Zanzibar we had a twelve hour stopover in Nairobi, and we wanted to squeeze in another safari trip. Rather than heading into the city centre and visiting the various travel agents, we opted to hire a taxi driver at the airport, and for a fixed fee he agreed to drive us wherever we wanted for the entire day. Nairobi National Park is only a half hour drive from the airport, so it was our first port of call. Given it's proximity to the capital it's surprising to find so much wildlife, especially when you can see the skyscrapers in the background! The usual culprits of giraffe, zebra, ostrich, impala etc can all be found in abundance, but we were also lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a rhino and her baby. They were very shy and headed off at the first sign of us, but it was nice to know they existed - we never saw a rhino on our four day trip to the Masai Mara!
There is also an animal sanctuary attached to the National Park, and it's well worth a visit. They keep numerous animals which for some reason can't be released into the wild, although they hope to release many of them over time. The highlight was undoubtably the baby cheetahs, three sisters who were just lounging in the sun. Just like big domestic cats, and incredibly cute!
