Northern Thailand has experienced a large growth in the number of tourists over the past few years, and it's estimated that over 800,000 people now go trekking every year. The largest town Chiang Mai is the main starting post for most people, although increasingly Chiang Rai nearby is also being used. Just about every hotel and guesthouse in town offers some treks varying from in duration from one day to five days, or longer on demand. Most treks, including ours, involve other activities such as elephant riding and bamboo rafting, plus visiting numerous local hill tribes.
