Fraser Island is the worlds largest sand island, and a World Heritage Site. The only way to get around is in a 4WD vehicle as the inland tracks are really bumpy and you will need to drive on the beach (look out for the creeks and wash-outs!). You must also be aware of planes, as in addition to being an officially designated highway, the beach is also the island's airstrip. The Maheno is a luxury liner which ran aground on Fraser Island in 1935 during a cyclone, and its remains can be seen lying on the beach. Somehow it just adds to the romantic atmosphere! We also passed 'The Pinnacles', interestingly coloured sand cliffs and some rather impressive dunes (as you might expect on a sand island!). Lake Wabby is one of the more popular destinations. It's a clear water lake surrounded on one side by forest and the other by a huge sand dune which leads steeply down to the waters edge. Indian Head, at the north end of the island, is another popular camping spot. It's tough going even in a 4WD vehicle, but a very enjoyable driving experience. The views from here are great - sometimes you may be lucky enough to see whales swimming past the point (we weren't). We spent three days on Fraser Island and thoroughly enjoyed it. Watch out for the dingoes, they are far cheekier than you'd expect and will take food out of closed boxes if left in the open.
