Cairns is the capital of northern Queensland and home to two natural habitats so spectacular that they are listed by the World Heritage Society; The Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest. We took a day trip out to the Barrier Reef and went diving - unfortunately our underwater photos weren't worth including here! The water was beautifully clear and the colourful sea life was fascinating.
We didn't have enough time to properly explore Cape Tribulation which is supposedly a must see, but we did make it to the Atherton Tablelands, a lush plateau 90km north west from Cairns. Unfortunately we visited at the end of the dry season, so our circuit to see some spectacular waterfalls was more like a circuit to see a small stream cascase over rocks! We also visited the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park and were shown how to play a didgeridoo - incredibly difficult!
