Sovereign Hill in Ballarat is a 'living' museum where the aim is to recreate an Australian town ten years after gold was discovered in 1851. It's only a 90 min drive from Melbourne. There are over 40 horses & 300 staff involved, plus 200 people also volunteer on a regular basis to provide colourful costume characters throughout the township. The 'businesses' you can enjoy include the bakery, candy shop and a photographic studio, and each is run and produces goods exactly as they would have been done in the 1850's.
