Alice Springs is located in the heart of Australia in the Northern Territory, and despite the common misconception of it being desert it is located at the junction of two rivers, the river Charles and the river Todd. For many tourists, Alice Springs is merely a staging post for the Uluru Katja National Park, until recently known as Ayers Rock but there is more to it than that. The School of the Air is a radio based school which opened in 1951 and was at that time the first such service anywhere in the world. This unique school was introduced to provide an education to the widely dispersed and geographically remote population. Natural attractions in the region include Simpson's Gap, the Alice Springs Desert Park, the West MacDonnell ranges and Kings Canyon, while history comes alive at the Overland Telegraph Station (the original Alice Springs).
